Hi there,

I am struggling in getting NWChem compiled on a LINUX cluster using Intel's MKL (composer XE 2013 SP1) because it does not find the BLAS/LAPACK libraires.

Here it is some of the Intel/MPI environmental variables as seen by the compilation script:

However, while compiling I keep getting this message:

configure: WARNING: BLAS library not found, using internal BLAS
configure: WARNING: LAPACK library not found, using internal LAPACK

with the corresponding compile-time error:

tce_residual_t1.F(176): error #6404: This name does not have a type, and must have an explicit type. [DDOT]
residual = ddot(size,dbl_mb(k_r1),1,dbl_mb(k_r1),1)

Any ideas what might be the cause of my troubles?
Thanks.

Please report the first upload the file $NWCHEM_TOP/src/tools/build/config.log to a website where we can read it

Also, I forgot to add that the DDOT error disappeared once I started with a fresh installation for 64bit. However, the MKL BLAS/LAPACK are never found while building.

The configure script cannot find the blas library since your BLASOPT definition includes Scalapack and this definition requires MPI libraries for a successful link process.
export BLASOPT="-L${MKLROOT}/lib/intel64 -lmkl_scalapack_ilp64 -lmkl_intel_ilp64 -lmkl_core -lmkl_sequential -lmkl_blacs_intelmpi_ilp64 -lpthread -lm"

My suggestion is to use the following BLASOPT definition (that I got from the very same Intel Adviso website you mentioned by unselecting the Scalapack component)
e
xport BLASOPT="-Wl,--start-group ${MKLROOT}/lib/intel64/libmkl_intel_ilp64.a ${MKLROOT}/lib/intel64/libmkl_core.a ${MKLROOT}/lib/intel64/libmkl_sequential.a -Wl,--end-group -lpthread -lm"

Hi,

Thanks for your reply and the suggestion for BLASOPT. I am will try it immediately.
I will let you know how it goes.

Hi,

I selected Scalapack because I want to build NWChem for MPI (intel MPI to be precise). Should I understand that unselecting scalapack but defining all the MPI-related variables will still build a nwchem with MPI support?

Best,

Alejandro

While building NWChem with my initial options, it failed to find the MKL BLAS, but used instead the BLAS from NWChem, and finished the compilation without errors. The binaries it produced are

$NWCHEM_TOP/bin/$NWCHEM_TARGET/nwchem
$NWCHEM_TOP/bin/$NWCHEM_TARGET/depend.x

notice that there are no "parallel" file.

with the following static libraires

$NWCHEM_TOP/lib/$NWCHEM_TARGET/
libanalyze.a libcphf.a libetrans.a libnwctask.a libnwxc.a libproperty.a libspace.a
libband.a libdangchang.a libgradients.a libnwcutil.a libofpw.a libpspw.a libstepper.a

libccsd.a libdriver.a libmoints.a libnwpwlib.a libpfft.a libselci.a
libcons.a libesp.a libmp2.a libnwpython.a libprepar.a libsolvation.a

Is this the expected output for both bin and lib?

Best,

Alejandro

Yes,
The files you report are the one that one expects to see at the end of a successful compilation.
The "parallel" file is no longer used, since NWChem is launched using mpirun as any other MPI based application

Hi Edoapra,

I re-built NWChem with MKL options as you suggested. This time it found the BLAS and SCALAPACK but not the LAPACK (!):

configure: Checks for BLAS,LAPACK,ScaLAPACK
configure:
configure: Attempting to locate BLAS library
checking for BLAS with user-supplied flags... yes
configure: Attempting to locate LAPACK library
configure: WARNING: LAPACK library not found, using internal LAPACK
configure: Attempting to locate SCALAPACK library
checking for SCALAPACK with user-supplied flags... yes
checking whether SCALAPACK implements pdsyevr... yes
configure:

I have put the the install script, the output of the make and the config.log in the links below.
If you are so kind to look at them, maybe you can spot what's wrong with parametrization of MKL.
Thanks.

Alejandro

Don't worry about lapack. This failure is not going to have any impact on the rest of the NWChem compilation.

Hi Edoapra,

Thanks for the feedback on LAPACK. Indeed the compilation of NWChem passed OK even with the LAPACK warning.

However, the built seems to have some problems, depending on the host (maybe it is only one problem that manifest differently depending on the host configuration).

If I try to run NWChem on a host with RHEL5

Linux isei 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5 #1 SMP Fri Sep 17 04:57:05 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

the run-time errot I get is

[diaz-ortiz@isei mytests]$nwchem dft_feco5.nw
nwchem: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.7' not found (required by nwchem)

If on the other hand I submit the job to a host with CentOS6

Linux isei113.hpc 2.6.32-504.1.3.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Nov 11 23:01:20 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

the run-time errot I get is

In the case of host with RHEL5, I understand the error message because

However in the case of host with CentOS6:

The GLIBC should be OK.

Is this error in the CentOS6 hots telling me that I should redefine the OpenMP variables?
For instance, like this

export MKL_NUM_THREADS=4
export MKL_DYNAMIC=FALSE
export OMP_NUM_THREADS=1

I look forward to your reply. Thanks.
